The international celebration of #GivingTuesday is just a week away. Launched in 2012, Giving Tuesday follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping sprees, encouraging companies, nonprofits, and individuals to shift their focus to holiday giving.

Powered by social media and collaboration, #GivingTuesday has grown over time. Last year, the global day of giving racked up 1.3 million social media mentions across 71 countries. It also involved 700,000 online donors and resulted in $116.7 million raised online. These numbers are expected to increase for this year’s #GivingTuesday, which will take place on November 29th, 2016.

Nonprofits have implemented different strategies to maximize donations in the past. The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) leveraged #GivingTuesday to fulfill their purpose of preventing hunger in the D.C. metropolitan area. The CAFB posted about #GivingTuesday on their Facebook and Twitter, declaring that they would match gifts they received. They promoted a clear message that “$10 provides 25 meals for families in need.” These messages were paired with images of children that would benefit from the donations. The CAFB ultimately raised $87,000 from more than 400 donors on #GivingTuesday.

Brands frequently get involved too. In 2015, Kohl’s donated $1 for every Kohl’s Cares purchase (all $5 or less). By using Twitter to spread their campaign hashtag #KohlsCares, they raised nearly $6 million for Toys for Tots and boosted their own brand.

So how can your nonprofit ensure a successful #GivingTuesday? The first step is to start with a social media plan and effective message strategy. Formulate a concise brand message you wish to promote in an attention-getting way. Ask yourself: What makes your brand unique? Why should people donate to your nonprofit? Who will benefit from their donation? Once you have a strong message to communicate, social media can be a valuable tool.

For those that want to exceed #GivingTuesday goals and maximize donations, Snips Social Good campaigns are a great option — not to mention one of our favorite new campaigns, because we love having a way for influencers to give back. Just by sharing great messages, Snips influencers can help your charitable organization spread your #GivingTuesday message across every device and social channel and increase audience reach. But the best part is that 100% of Social Good campaign profits are donated directly to the charity. Meaning, influencers are not only building awareness, but they are also directly driving financial support. And the more you share, the more these incredible organizations benefit.
